Why do we like art in our homes?

Ever since my school days, I've been fascinated by the fact that our ancestors created cave paintings. The reasons behind these ancient artworks have always intrigued me. As time marched on, humans in every era have continued to decorate their surroundings and create images. Even the modern selfie has its roots in this tradition, reminiscent of self-portraits or the commissioned paintings of nobles who wished to see themselves immortalised in art.

Reflecting on my journey through art and history, I've realised that our love for images and decoration is as old as time itself. It's not just about capturing our likeness on cave walls or canvas; it's about the intrinsic human desire to surround ourselves with beauty and stories.

More than decoration

But why do we fill our spaces with images? It's not simply for beautification. Each picture, each piece of art, tells a story—a narrative of personal triumphs, communal heritage, or even imagined worlds. They serve as windows to the soul, offering glimpses into the vast spectrum of human emotion and experience.

The love of pictures: Beyond the self

While the modern selfie does echo the age-old tradition of self-portraiture, our fascination with images extends far beyond self-representation. It's about connection, the shared human condition, and the timeless quest to find beauty in life.

The role of pictures in our lives

  • Memory Keepers: They capture moments fleeting in nature, allowing us to revisit and cherish them.
  • Storytellers: Through images, we tell our stories, share our visions, and communicate our emotions.
  • Identity and Culture: Artworks reflect our identity and cultural heritage, connecting us to our roots and to each other.
  • Inspiration: Surrounding ourselves with images that inspire can motivate us, spark creativity, and fuel our dreams.

Embracing the decorative spirit

Embellishing our spaces with artwork is a testament to our love for beauty and storytelling. Each chosen piece adds another layer to the tapestry of our lives, enriching our daily experiences with colour, form, and narrative.

Choosing what we love

When selecting artwork or decorative pieces, the guiding principle should always be love and connection. Whether it's a print that catches your eye or a painting that moves you, the best choices are those that resonate on a personal level, bringing joy and inspiration into your space.

I intend my images purely for enjoyment and decoration, and I hope others like them too. I can only hope that those pieces where I try to touch on deeper layers of emotions, also appeal to some.
